WHAT CAUSES SNORING?
Snoring, by definition, is the rhythmic respiratory noise, having a frequency of about 300 Hertz, produced by the vibration of the soft palate (together with the uvula and tonsils) as the current of air is drawn from the nose.

Homeo-S: The end of the nightmare!

The soft palate, a membrane located at the back of the mouth, which may be abnormally long (or in certain instances, even protuberant or thick), is relaxed during sleep; it constricts the passage of air breathed in. This phenomenon is accentuated by the congestion and dryness of the mucous membranes and is usually brought on by sleeping on one’s back.

The thickness of the membrane increases with age: it is larger in men. This may be why the majority of snorers are male and over fifty years of age.

Snoring may be worse in a hot atmosphere, and is invariably worse when one has a cold; congestion of the upper air passages is equally an important factor.

Tobacco, alcohol and the use of tranquilizers encourages snoring. Often one owes an occasional snore to a boozy meal or the use of a sleeping draught.

Certain individuals snore from a young age, because of the presence of enlarged tonsils.

Bouncing against the pharynx, the soft palate provokes the snoring noise and the passage of air becomes turbulent. Often the snorer breathes in more and more strongly and snoring reaches a crescendo. The snorer can reach the stage of asphyxia: he wakes up out of breath (sleep apnea).
